Snail Trail 🐌 πŸ₯¬ πŸ€ŽπŸ’š

1st Mar 2026

Infants have been learning some facts about snails 🐌 in our science lessons. These are some of our favourite ones we'd like to share with you......

  • Ever wondered about the largest snail on the planet?! Well, the whopping African Land Snail can grow up to 30cm in length, that's longer than our rulers! .....(We doubt we'll find any of these in our gardens πŸ˜‰ )
  • It is a delicacy to eat snails (escargot) in France....( We certainly won't be trying these for lunch any time soon πŸ˜‰ )

This lead us to explore further, looking and responding to 'The Snail' by the French artist Henri Matisse. We decided to use Matisse's technique of "painting with scissors ". This involved the children creating their own snails by arranging cut paper shapes in a spiral. Some cheeky snails were even on a misson to find a yummy cabbage patch! Can you spot them?! This art project helped the children explore colour, pattern and abstract art, whilst fostering creativity and fine motor skills.

After we enjoyed storytime by reading 'The Snail and the Whale ' by one of our favourite authors Julia Donaldson. This is a delightful rhyming tale about adventure and friendship and the idea that even the smallest creatures can make a big difference ❀️
